What is the Women’s Tour for Global Understanding?

The tour is an international undertaking initiated to awaken the hearts and minds of millions throughout the world. WTGU is an interchange between American and International women to share the love, fellowship, skills and resources necessary to make a difference in the world and break the cycles of violence and suffering. A project of The Foundation for A Healing Among Nations, its first phase project focuses on women of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. In the fall of 2003 we brought twelve English-speaking women from Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Israel to the United States.

What kind of women will be on the tour?

The women come from a wide variety of occupations, educational levels, economic backgrounds, and spiritual beliefs. There will be artists and activists, mothers, writers, healers, workers, students, administrators, educators, and any number of other vocations.

What will they be doing in each city?

WTGU participants will spend five days together in a retreat sharing; their stories & values, while learning new skills to become an effective peacemaker and a healing presence. Activities will rang e from training in conflict resolution, reconciliation, forgiveness, global simulation practices, historical state of the world education, conversation circles and community forums, to transformational healing .

The women will receive special global conflict resolution training in sessions facilitated by the United States Institute for Peace. In addition, WTGU participants will engage in activities ranging from conversation circles and community forums, to transformational retreats. They will also engage in the sharing of sacred rituals, music, dance, food and stories from the pages of their lives. They will also visit schools, homeless shelters, spiritual establishments and religious institutions.

Will these activities be open to the public?

Our outreach efforts will insure that these women are joined by others of all ages from all walks of life - the indigenous and the indigent, scholars and students, mothers and daughters, spiritual practitioners and believers in the sacred principles of freedom, dignity and love.

What is the purpose of the tour?

Our vision is to create meaningful opportunities for peace, develop a deeper understanding between nations, and promote global kinship between women of diverse backgrounds and cultures. We also plan to establish trained peacemaker networks for positive social change and create a global fund for future women’s projects.

When did the tour begin?

The Women’s Tour for Global Understanding began in the fall of 2003 with welcoming ceremonies at Gather The Women, an international conference sponsored by Women of Vision and Action.

Yes, you can add a personal note to this fact sheet and forward it to others who share your commitment to global peace and understanding. Many are helping to raise funds by giving dinners, selling items, and sponsoring special events. They have started fundraising drives among friends and family, as well as at their vocational, social, educational and religious institutions.
